Abuja Airport Runway ready 248-hours ahead of deadline – FAAN
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has said that the runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, would be ready today, being monday 17th April, 2 days ahead of the deadline. Engineer. Saleh Dunoma the Managing Director of FAAN said “we will be ready on 17th April but we are leaving the remaining two days for Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). We have written to them and they will soon come to do the preliminary inspection.
They have to certify the airport that what we have built is in accordance with their standards. If there is any observation as a result of the inspection, we will now make sure we carry out corrections”.
The Abuja airport was shut on March 8 for six weeks to enable the rebuild of the 3.6 kilometer runway by Julius Berger and re-open it by 19th April, 2017. The runway, was constructed in the year 1982 and was meant to last for 20 years, but had been in use for over 34 years without major repairs and maintenance or even concurring to the initial estimated number of years to use it.
